How Do I Research Keywords on Etsy? Here’s how you do it.
When you hear about “keyword research on Etsy,” you might think it’s complicated or requires hours of research. Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than you think.
First of all, let’s get into why keyword research is so essential for Etsy. I like to think of it as the foundation, the “bread” before all the toppings, haha, as I’d like to call it.
Keyword research is the basis for finding gold digital products. Basically, if you can find out what people are searching for, you know exactly what you should be making on Etsy. There’s your gold!
This post will teach you step-by-step how to do so.
The first step is to brainstorm your keywords for your potential Etsy products. Because how will you know what to search if you don’t know what you want to search for? 🙂
What is the best Etsy keyword research tool?
There are many Etsy keyword research tools out there such as Alura, Erank, EverBee, or EtsyHunt. I actually wrote a whole post on the best Etsy Chrome Extensions you can use to find the best keyword research tools.
But if you’re looking for a free way (obviously who doesn’t like free options, haha) to search for Etsy keywords, then you’ll love what I’m about to show you!
The Etsy keywords method I'm about to teach you is 100% free. You can use it to find the best Etsy keywords and know exactly what your audience is looking for. So keep on reading!
1. Brainstorm your keywords for Etsy
If you are struggling to come up with keywords for your potential Etsy product, here are some helpful things to consider:
- Product Type: Clearly define your product, such as wooden blocks for babies, a green fitness planner, or cute animal stickers?
- Physical Attributes: Detail the material, color, size, and style of your product. Whether it’s minimalist, boho, a certain color or follows a specific aesthetic, communicate its visual characteristics.
- Target Audience: Identify the ideal recipient of your product. Is it designed for husbands, boyfriends, wives, girlfriends, bosses, teachers? Get clear about who you’re selling to.
- Occasion/Seasonal Holidays: Specify the occasions for which your product is suitable. Whether it’s for Christmas, weddings, birthdays, or special events, define what the occasion is.
2. use the a-z method
After you have finished brainstorming for your Etsy keywords and have you a better idea of who you want to create for, now it’s time to implement the A-Z method.
First, you want to use the Etsy search bar. Let’s say you decided on creating “digital planners.” You want to type those keywords in the Etsy search bar.
Next, after “digital planners,” you’re going to type the letter “A.” You’ll see a list of results. These are the TOP keywords that people are ACTUALLY searching for on Etsy. SAY WHAT?!
You might notice that I have numbers after that. It’s because I use EverBee as my primary keyword research tool. I find it helps me save so much time with finding tags and seeing what my competitors’ top selling products are
But going back to this free Etsy keyword tool, this is gold right there! You can see that more than 1,000 are searching up “adhd digital planner” and “android digital planner”!
Let’s continue to do this for letters “B” and “C” and see what we get, haha. See what I did there?
I’d encourage you to go through this process all the way from “A” to “Z” and mark down what you get that’s most relevant to your digital product. For example, if you see for letter “C” on the bottom, it shows “digital planner computer,” but you’re not actually going to create that, haha.
Once you have your list of keywords, now we’re going to move onto to step 3.
3. search for low competition etsy keywords
Here is a good guideline of what’s considered low competition to high competition.
- Low competition: 5,000 results or less
- Low-mid competition: 5,000 – 10,000 results
- Mid competition: 10,000 – 50,000 results
- High competition: 50,000+ results
When we’re just starting off, we want to find results that are within the low to low-mid competition range.
So let’s put it to the test, starting with “boho digital planners.”
You can see that “boho digital planners” has 15,000 search results. That’s not bad! But let’s see if we can make it even lower. Sometimes, I look at the titles of what Etsy sellers are typing to get an idea of what keywords are helping them rank.
For example, I saw this digital product on the first page and first row of “boho digital planners”!
If you look at the last photo, “That Girl Planner, Undated Digital Planner”… that’s an Etsy keyword you don’t want to miss!
For digital planners, there are “dated” and “undated” that people are looking for. So I refined my Etsy keyword search, and here’s what I got.
There are 2,000 results for this keyword! YAY 🙂
This is why it’s so important to keep browsing and seeing what other top Etsy sellers are doing to rank on the first page. These Etsy sellers have probably had years of experience and are ranking at the top of their niche. So clearly, they’ve done their keyword research!
Let’s recap!
So let’s recap how you can find the best keywords on Etsy!
- Brainstorm your keywords for your potential Etsy product (use the questions under step 1)
- Use the A-Z free method to find Etsy keywords to rank for. Put in your keywords first and then start from “A” and end at “Z.”
- Search for low competition Etsy keywords by choosing a keyword phrase that you got from your A-Z method. See if you can lower the search results by looking at other Etsy seller’s Etsy keyword titles.
And there you have it! This is your free Etsy keyword method that you can use to start finding top selling products to sell. I hope you’ve found this Etsy keyword research method helpful. Don’t hesitate to email me or contact me if you have any questions. I’d be more than happy to help!
